How to make an animated QR code
- Enter the content and style the code: colours, logo, shape or photo all carry over into the animation.
- Press “Animate” under the preview (or “Animate this QR code” in Shape & photo).
- Pick an effect: Shine, Scan line or Pulse. The preview loops so you can compare them.
- Download a GIF for WhatsApp, email and slides, a video for Instagram Reels, Stories and YouTube Shorts, or an animated SVG for a web page.
- Scan the playing animation from another phone to check it reads at your screen size.
Effects and formats
- Shine
- A soft light sweeps diagonally across the code every two seconds. Subtle and works with any design.
- Scan line
- A glowing line moves up and down over the code, a clear “scan me” signal on screens and digital signage.
- Pulse
- The whole code gently grows and shrinks. Good for slides and presentations.
- Video format
- MP4 where the browser can record it (Safari, recent Chrome), otherwise WebM. Instagram and WhatsApp accept both; use GIF if a platform rejects WebM.
Where animated QR codes help
Instagram Reels and Stories
Movement catches the eye and tells viewers the code is something to scan, not decoration.
Digital menu boards and TV screens
A scan line on a screen at the counter draws attention from across the room.
Presentations and webinars
A pulsing code on the last slide gets more scans than a static one.
Email signatures and websites
A small GIF or animated SVG stands out without extra code.
Things to know
- Animation is for screens. For printing, download the normal PNG or SVG.
- GIFs use a limited colour palette, so very fine gradients and photos can look slightly grainy. The video keeps full colour.
- Some email apps (such as Outlook on Windows) show only the first frame of a GIF, which still scans.
- Video is recorded in real time, so it takes about six seconds to create.
Questions people ask
Does the animation stop the code from scanning?
No. Each effect only lightens a thin band, draws a line or slightly scales the code, so every frame keeps the full pattern readable.
Is anything uploaded to make the video?
No. The browser draws the frames and records them itself. Nothing leaves your device.
Can I animate a photo or heart-shaped QR code?
Yes. Whatever you design in the preview is what gets animated.
