How to create a Code 128 barcode
- Type your code, for example an SKU, order number or asset ID.
- The encoder switches between Code 128 sets A, B and C automatically to keep the barcode short (long runs of digits are packed two per bar pattern).
- Set the height so it fits your label, and keep the margins.
- Download SVG for label software, or PNG for documents.
Uses
Inventory and SKUs
Your own product codes in a warehouse system. No registration needed.
Asset tags
Laptops, tools and furniture with an ID like IT-00421.
Shipping labels
Couriers use Code 128 for tracking numbers (often as GS1-128 with application identifiers).
Limits
- This tool encodes printable ASCII characters (no accents or emoji), up to 80 characters.
- The longer the text, the wider the barcode. Over 20 characters may not fit a small label at a readable size.
- GS1-128 with application identifiers (like (01)…(17)…) needs a GS1-specific encoder; this page creates plain Code 128.
Questions people ask
Code 128 or Code 39?
Code 128 is shorter for the same data and supports lowercase. Use Code 39 only if your system specifically requires it.
Do I need GS1 numbers for Code 128?
Not for internal use. Only retail product barcodes need GS1 numbers.
