UPI QR Code for Your Shop: Make, Print and Use It Safely

A printed UPI QR code at the counter lets any customer pay you from Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM or their bank app, without asking for your number or spelling out an ID.

This guide shows how to make one from your UPI ID, when to fix an amount, how to print a counter standee, and the simple habits that stop the most common payment scams at the counter.

What is inside a UPI QR code

A UPI code holds a short payment link such as upi://pay?pa=tajcafe@okaxis&pn=Taj%20Cafe&cu=INR. The pa part is your UPI ID (also called VPA), pn is the name shown to the customer, and optional am and tn fields fix an amount and add a note.

When a customer scans it, their UPI app opens with your details filled in. They check the name, enter the amount if needed, and approve with their own UPI PIN. QRizeo is not part of the payment and never sees it; the money goes from their bank to yours through UPI.

Make the code in a minute

  • Find your UPI ID in your UPI app, usually under your profile. It looks like name@bank (for example shopname@okicici).
  • Open the UPI QR code generator, paste the UPI ID and add your shop or payee name.
  • Leave the amount empty for a counter code that every customer reuses. Add an amount only for a single bill or a fixed-price item.
  • Optionally add a note such as an invoice number, so the payment is easy to match later.
  • Make a ₹1 test payment from another phone. Check that the name you see in the app is your name before printing anything.

Print a Scan & Pay standee

Press “Print standee” under the UPI fields. You get a ready-made A4/A5 card with a “Scan & Pay” heading, your shop name, the QR code, your UPI ID and a short safety note for customers. Choose one of four colours, then print it or save it as a PDF for a print shop.

Print the code itself at 8–10 cm wide for a counter. Laminate it or use a matte sticker sheet: glossy lamination under shop lights is a common reason for slow scans.

Personal UPI ID or merchant QR?

Any UPI ID works in the code. Many small shops start with a personal ID, which is fine for occasional payments. As the shop grows, a merchant account from your bank or a payment provider usually adds things a printed code cannot: payment sound boxes, daily settlement reports and support for disputes.

You can still design and print the code here with a merchant UPI ID. Only the ID inside the code changes.

Protect the counter from scams

  • Never trust the customer’s screen. A “payment successful” screen can be faked or show an old payment. Confirm in your own app, sound box or bank SMS before handing over goods.
  • Check your printed code now and then. Scammers stick their own QR code over a shop’s code. Scan yours with the QR code scam checker: it shows the UPI ID and name the code really pays.
  • You never need to scan a code or enter your PIN to receive money. Anyone who says otherwise (a “buyer”, a “refund desk”, a “bank officer”) is trying to make you pay them.
  • Keep the standee’s safety line visible. It reminds customers to check the name before paying, which protects you as well.
